Farewell Letters

By Hajra Omar

The first letter arrives on an unremarkable, January morning. It appears on her coffee table to the clamour of news anchors arguing about fires ravaging some far off continent. The paper is more solid dust than stationary; ink bleeds through to the back.

January 20th 2090

Today, the world ends.

Humanity in its infinite greed and self-entitlement has been the instrument of its own extinction. To say the process was acute or unforeseen would be a lie. We do not believe this missive shall bring change. However, selfishly, we wish to unburden our conscience and pass knowing that concrete forewarning was given. This is an attempt to tell our story, from the end of history.

Here is where it stops. Not the message itself, but it is significantly difficult to read anything on paper when it crumbles to a fine powder in your hands. She stares at it for a moment.  There is no indication of a sender or any intended recipient. A joke then, she thinks, crumpling its remains into the hearth, none of my concern.

He notices the letter on a crisp April evening, tucked between the stacks of toilet paper his father has hoarded. It has an untidy scrawl on thick cream paper, with fresh ink that stains his fingers.

April 15th 2080

Today, we tried to bring the bees back.

We failed. Just like with the rhinos, the whales, and the rainforests. The genetic code of cloned life continues to be weak. So on this day the last bee trembled, fluttered its useless wings, and died. Once again we witnessed the bitter truth: Life cannot thrive within the artificial chains of human regret.

Yesterday, we discovered the Korolev crater on Mars is pooled poison.

After decades of striving to find another New World to colonize, we are now slapped with the truth that the one we wrecked is the only one we get to have. Predictably, when faced with the inconsequentiality of our existence, we dream of conquering the cosmos.

On a sorrowful day at the end of May, she finds the letter crammed into her pocket. It is unusual in the way all letters are now.

May 26th 2070

For a year, we’ve tried to fix it.

The Last Plague has lasted five decades. Humans believed they would unite in the face of such adversity and persevere. What a childish dream.

Homo sapiens, a species of habit, do not dwell on other’s misery. When the End began fifty years ago we tucked our heads safely into the sand and welcomed the apocalypse’s approach.

The first summer without ice in the arctic frightened us. We travelled back to the first battlefield, the Holocaust, the discovery of nuclear power, to every instance where morality decided to peruse unchecked slumber.

We failed to change anything.

She crushes the paper, furious with herself. There is no time to waste on tasteless jests; important things have to be done, things that matter. It is hard to breathe in this world right now.  She picks up her sign and joins the crowd.

In the dying city of a war-torn country, under piles of collapsed mortar, there lays a letter.

July 1st 2020

Today, when the annals of history had their sight upon us, the world chose to lay its collective conscience to rest and go to the beach.

Three hundred and sixty-five unheeded warnings are received during the quarantine of 2020.
